OVERVIEW AND DESCRIPTION OF DOWN SYNDROME

Down Syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder that is caused by an extra chromosome 21 being present in an individual's cells.
Three types: trisomy 21, mosaicism, and translocation.
  • Trisomy 21 is when there is an extra chromosome 21 in each cell resulting in 47 chromosomes in each cell. (most common type)
  • Mosaicism is when only some of the cells contain 47 chromosomes, while the other cells contain an accurate 46. (least common type)
  • Translocation is where the extra chromosome attaches (or translocates) to a different chromosome.

Additional chromosome is almost always the result of faulty cell division, in either the egg or sperm. Extra chromosome is most likely from the mother, because only 5% of the cases have been traced to the father. DS is one of the most common chromosome abnormalities. (1 in 800 to 1,000 live births) It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. The cause of DS is unknown. What is known, however, is that the extra chromosome 21 causes an extra dose of some proteins, which causes the typical features of the syndrome.

Children with DS can usually do what "typical" children can do. They generally do things later than other children. Many adults with DS get [[#|jobs]] and get married. [[#|Women]] are fertile and can have children; men are believed to be sterile. The life expectancy of an individual with DS is 55 years.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES THAT CAN BE USED TO SUPPORT LEARNING

  • Visual Representation-pictorial

external image images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRVU9UfzGLnuBeoz5yT_K_I3nN9VOxHeu9Xaxuv8Su-2VCNEvhD
DESCRIPTION OF TECHNOLOGICAL TOOL: It is a visual representation as by photograph, painting, object, or drawing. It is a display of pictures that helps establish attention better for children that lack auditory processing and receptive language skills. Although this technology is typically used for Autism it is also great for those with DS because they are generally stronger learners visually.
RATIONAL FOR USE OF TOOL IN THIS SETTING: The rational is to utilize visual supports to teach learners how to better communicate during everyday home, school, and community interactions. Due to delayed speech for many children with DS, visuals help them to communicate their needs, wants, and desires.
LIST OF SEVERAL WAYS THIS TOOL CAN BE USED TO SUPPORT LEARNING:
  • help with difficulties in comprehending spoken language and/or auditory processing impairments
  • provides communication via an alternative modality (visual)
  • allows the instructor to take advantage of an area of relative strength-visual processing- to extract the intended meaning
  • cuts down on confusion
  • relieves anxiety
  • helps child make their own choices
  • helps child understand and add meaning in areas of communication
PREREQUISITE SKILLS NEEDED TO UTILIZE THE TOOL: They need to be taught what the pictures represent. Sometimes they need to be created by teacher or parent to meet the individual need of the child.
WORKSHEETS/ACTIVITIES THAT WILL SUPPORT THE USE OF THIS TOOL:
  • create matching picture games that use same pictures
  • create a personalized picture reading book using pictures from pictorial
  • create a pictorial from Google images that fits the needs of the child
  • create charts to help child with schedules, rules, routines, acceptable behaviors, and express emotions

Parents and teachers can learn more about how visuals help children with Down Syndrome at this website. It also offers free visuals and more links.
A program that uses Visual representations is called Teacch.
Teacch (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Related Handicapped Children) is designed for autism but works well for students with Down Syndrome. Teacch is an evidence-based service, training, and research program for individuals of all ages and skill levels with autism spectrum disorder.
  • can be implemented in regular school setting or intervention setting
  • based on the students being visual learners
  • aim to address difficulties with communication, organization, generalization, concepts, sensory processing, change and relating to others.
Teacch requires structure. The physical classroom is set up so students know what they are suppose to do and where to do it. The daily classroom schedule is set up for independent, group, and leisure activities. The teaching method is behavioral based. The goal is to maximize independence by getting students attention before instruction, using clear and concise language, presenting materials in an organized manner, and providing prompts which are student-specific and effective.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for DS

DESCRIPTION OF TECHNOLOGICAL TOOL:
This tool is again generally used for autism, but it can help treat those with DS by understanding behavior and how it is affected by the environment "physical or social" that might change or be changed by someone's
behaviors.
RATIONAL FOR USE OF TOOL IN THIS SETTING: The reason to use applied behavior analysis is to identify skills the student needs to work on and target those specific skills. For example, if behavior is an issue than ABA can help teach proper behavior. ABA can be used to come up with objectives for student's IEPs and help teacher plan goals to meet those objectives.
LIST OF SEVERAL WAYS THIS TOOL CAN BE USED TO SUPPORT LEARNING:
  • healthier lifestyle
  • foster skills such as looking, listening, imitating, reading, conversing, and understanding another person's perspective
PREREQUISITE SKILLS NEEDED TO UTILIZE THE TOOL: Parents and teachers need to understand the behavior before using ABA.
WORKSHEETS/ACTIVITIES THAT WILL SUPPORT THE USE OF THIS TOOL:
The ABC Observation and Analysis form can be used to support the teachers allegations of problematic behavior in the classroom.

This website will help parents and teachers learn how ABA can help children with DS.

ICT Magic

DESCRIPTION OF TECHNOLOGICAL TOOL:
ICT Magic can help students with DS by giving them access to various educational websites that fit what they are trying to learn about. It makes children actually take an interest in learning.
RATIONAL FOR USE OF TOOL IN THIS SETTING: ICT Magic helps students grasp ideas that just seem out of reach. It supports their strength of visual learning.
LIST OF SEVERAL WAYS THIS TOOL CAN BE USED TO SUPPORT LEARNING: ICT Magic provides visuals to help aid in understanding, student can create avators and go on quests all while playing educational games and interacting with other users, and there are links to help students that are having trouble beginning a story by giving their story the push it needs, and so on.
PREREQUISITE SKILLS NEEDED TO UTILIZE THE TOOL: Need to be able to find apps.
WORKSHEETS/ACTIVITIES THAT WILL SUPPORT THE USE OF THIS TOOL: There are thousands of videos, games, and sites the child can access through ICT Magic to aid in their understanding of concepts.
  • Ipads for learning

    external image images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSgMcJm8T-iFqMv7Rjv5jyB725M-TVjvUiywVapdPPSxphsCHmipA

    DESCRIPTION OF TECHNOLOGICAL TOOL:

Ipads can be used to enhance instruction. It can help the learner analyze new information quicker. It helps connect new information to previous knowledge.
RATIONAL FOR USE OF TOOL IN THIS SETTING: It gives children access to voice over, text that speaks, auto text, guided access, assistive touch, and many other applications that make learning easier. It is easier to type on for some students than a regular computer. It allows them to work at their own pace, while utilizing the right technology for them.
LIST OF SEVERAL WAYS THIS TOOL CAN BE USED TO SUPPORT LEARNING:
  • reinforcement of skills
  • reduce dependence on others
  • intuitive touch allowing the student to access content
  • relieves anxiety by giving visual support
  • enables kids to progress at their own pace
PREREQUISITE SKILLS NEEDED TO UTILIZE THE TOOL:
WORKSHEETS/ACTIVITIES THAT WILL SUPPORT THE USE OF THIS TOOL:
  • games and puzzles on apps. that increase in level of competency
